Every year, we pile millions of tons of waste into these massive sites, and as they fill up, we’re forced to find new places to put our ever-growing garbage heaps. But what if we could flip the script? What if we could take a major chunk of what gets buried—plastic waste—and turn it into something useful instead?

That’s exactly what we plan to do at FlexOnyx. Our plastics-to-fuels refinery isn’t just about creating valuable products; it’s also about making better use of the space we have. With every ton of plastic we divert from landfills, we’re extending the lifespan of these sites and making room for more of the things that actually belong there.

Less Plastic, More Life for Landfills

Landfills were never designed to be plastic dumping grounds. In fact, plastic doesn’t really do anything in a landfill—it just sits there, taking up space for decades (or centuries). Unlike organic waste, which decomposes over time and generates landfill gas (methane that can be captured and used for energy), plastics don’t break down in any meaningful way.

By pulling plastics out of the landfill stream, we’re making room for organic waste—the stuff that actually contributes to the natural life cycle of a landfill. More organic matter means more landfill gas, which is not only a cleaner energy source but also a revenue stream for waste management companies. It’s a win-win-win: less plastic cluttering up the landscape, more value extracted from the waste we do throw away, and more free space in the landfill, extending its useful life for years or decades.

The Land Footprint of Plastic Waste

To put things into perspective, one FlexOnyx facility can process tens of millions of tons of waste plastics over its lifetime. If left unchecked, that waste would otherwise take up hundreds of acres of landfill space—a staggering amount of land that could be put to better use.

By reducing landfill use, we help preserve open spaces, reduce environmental impact, and lower the costs associated with building and maintaining new waste sites. The impact isn’t just local, either—less plastic in landfills means less plastic leaking into the environment, including our oceans, rivers, and natural landscapes.

Plastic as a Resource, Not a Burden

For too long, plastic waste has been treated as a problem with no solution. But the reality is, it’s a valuable resource—one that can be refined into useful fuels and petrochemical feedstocks instead of left to pollute the planet.

By rethinking how we handle plastic waste, we’re not just keeping landfills from overflowing—we’re turning trash into opportunity. Our approach means fewer plastics making their way into the ocean, fewer microplastics contaminating ecosystems, and a real step toward closing the loop on plastics circularity.

A Future with Less Waste and More Possibility

FlexOnyx isn’t just a refinery; it’s a new way of thinking about waste and land use. Every ton of plastic we process is a ton that doesn’t end up buried in the ground or floating in our waterways. It’s a step toward a future where landfills serve their intended purpose, where waste is treated as an asset rather than an afterthought, and where land is used more wisely.

Land is one of our most precious resources, and with smarter waste management solutions like FlexOnyx, we can keep more of it open, productive, and thriving.

We tend to think of landfills as the final resting place for our trash, but the truth is, they are a limited resource.
